2. Aemon Targaryen
Aemon Targaryen is one of the few purely noble characters in Game of Thrones. Despite being blind, he continues to loyally serve as maester of the Nights Watch while offering wise advice to those who will listen. However, he is also extremely old, especially by Westerosi standards, which means he is not much long for this world. Its really as simple as that. And with the arrival of Stannis Baratheon, massive changes will be coming to the Nights Watch, and those changes will surely accumulate. Aemon can't serve as maester of Castle Black for much longer, so it seems possible that he could be cast aside for younger blood. All this commotion will inevitably take a toll on Aemon's already deteriorating health. Evidence for the old maester's demise can be found in the trailer, in which you can briefly see what looks to be Aemon on a funeral pyre. Again, given his age, Aemon's death is inevitable, and while we will be sad to see him go, his loss might be the perfect opportunity for another character to take his place. Samwell Tarly already spends a lot of time with Aemon, and given his proclivity for more intellectual pursuits, he would be perfect for the role. But that's a whole other journey.
