Game Of Thrones: The Best Episode From Every Season

6. The Rains Of Castamere (S3E9)

Game Of Thrones Laws Of Gods And Men
HBO

There have been some gruesome, shocking moments in the history of Game of Thrones, but absolutely nothing can compete with the Red Wedding. Readers of the books may have known what was coming, but even so, it was one of the most jaw-dropping moments of the entire series.

Following Robb Stark breaking his promise of marrying one of Walder Frey's daughters in exchange for free passage across the Twins, the entire North was made to pay. Frey and Roose Bolton came together to murder the King in the North, his direwolf, his mother, his wife, his unborn child, and countless of his men.

This was a unique episode within the series, as there was no music playing over the credits after the bloody horror show. Nothing to distract from the silence in which the audience tried to process what they had just seen.

In spite of the scene for which the episode was named, there was much more to this episode than the Red Wedding. Bran warged into Hodor for the first time, Jon showed his true colours and betrayed Ygritte and the wildlings, and Dany sacked Astapor. However, it’s easy to see why you might have forgotten anything that didn’t happen at the Twins.
