Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch Review - 8 Ups & 3 Downs
4. It Humanises The Whole Process (And The Struggles)
It's easy to sit in the aftermath of a show like Game Of Thrones and write about why the show was terrible or disappointing. It takes a few seconds of careless rage to tweet, tagging HBO or the show's handle or even - in the worst offences - the actors/talent behind it. It's what the world of "fandom" has become.
What you don't think about - and what this documentary absolutely focuses upon - is the human cost of making this sort of incredible production. There's lots of people here with major investment beyond "will the fans like this," and the focus on people like the effects team absolutely nails that side of the production story.
While it would have been nice to see more of the cast and the directors, seeing the husband and wife team agonising over whether their work has impressed Weiss and Benioff and struggling to cope with being away from their young daughter because of the shoot is an entirely different, equally compelling angle.
When they reunite, it's really bloody lovely and yes, if you didn't cry a bit you're an animal.
