Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch Review - 8 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Insight Into The Creative Process (And Those Stop Motion Sequences)

The Night King
HBO

Obviously, there's always an element of watching a documentary like this in order to find out how they achieved everything. We like to see the warts and all reality behind the magic, because as much as we enjoy the trick, everybody wants to be knowledgable. It's the new age of the commodification of information, after all, and we're balls deep.

So seeing massive amounts of insight into the production of specific scenes - which was also the focus of the mini-documentaries that accompanied all but the last episode - is wonderful. Learning how the snow is done is something you probably didn't know you wanted to know. Becoming invested in the guys who spray it on the ground and look out for troublesome tire-tracks is as unexpected as it is impressive.

One of the best little reveals is that some of the storyboarding was done using stop motion. We briefly get to see a shot of a claymation Tormund and honestly now all I can think about is the entire Thrones run as a stop motion animation.
