Game Of Thrones: The Meaning Behind Every Episode Title (Season 1)

Episode 8 €“ The Pointy End

This episode (the first written by George R.R. Martin) takes its title from advice given to Arya Stark during her first swordfight lesson from her half-brother, Jon Snow, after he gives her a sword he had made for her. The scene the line is lifted from appears in the second episode of the series, €˜The Kingsroad€™, when Jon tells Arya to €œstick them with the pointy end€ after she asks how to fight using her newly acquired sword, which she has named Needle. This is relevant in this episode as it is the first time that Arya kills someone using Needle, by sticking him (a stableboy who tries to foil her escape and have her captured), with €˜the pointy end€™.
