Episode nine - the episode of each season which consistently seems to have the biggest payoff in the Game of Thrones series. The first season's big shock moment comes in the shape of Ned Stark's beheading, which is also where the title derives its name. The Great Sept of Baelor, which lends the episode its title, is the largest building in Kings Landing, and is named for King Baelor Targaryen, who ironically (considering the events of the episode and where it takes place) was known for his pacifism, and built the sept during his reign. This church is the location of Ned Stark's €˜confession€™ and subsequent beheading during the episode, which, due to being the centre of the faith of the seven, is chosen as a location where Ned Stark can allegedly be €˜judged by the Gods€™. The beheading of Ned stark at the behest of Joffrey Baratheon is also the moment mentioned earlier to have been foreshadowed by the direwolf found to have been killed by a Stag in episode one.
