Game Of Thrones: The Meaning Behind Every Episode Title (Season 2)

Episode 9 €“ Blackwater

Another 'explosive' (pun intended) ninth episode in Game Of Thrones. This time the entire episode takes place in only one location, a first for the series, and, up to this point, contains the smallest number of main cast members in an episode. Blackwater is the name of one of the largest rivers in Westeros, which flows into Blackwater Bay, surrounding Kings Landing, and is the river used by Stannis Baratheon's fleet to attack King's Landing. Due to the attack coming from, and mainly occurring in Blackwater, the battle is known as "The Battle of Blackwater" and it is this battle which is contained in the episode and that the title is derived from. Although the battle takes place at night in the episode, it actually takes place by day in the books; although in this case the lack of continuity is forgivable, considering how much of a dampener daylight would have put on the wildfire spectacle pictured above.
