Game Of Thrones: The Meaning Behind Every Episode Title (Season 2)

Episode 3 €“ What Is Dead May Never Die

Another episode title taken from a phrase customary to people from a specific region of Westeros, but this time by the people of the Iron Islands. "What is dead may never die" is the opening line of a prayer used on the Iron Islands, which is spoken to another Iron born, who responds with "but rises again, harder and stronger". This prayer is unique to the people of the Iron Islands as they have a separate belief system to the rest of Westeros, with their own deity, who is known as the Drowned God. As the name suggests, their God was drowned, but then resurrected as an immortal, which the phrase used in the episode's title alludes to. The phrase is also used in baptisms, as is the case in Theon Greyjoy's baptism, shown in the episode.
