Game Of Thrones: 10 Best Character Pairings So Far

9. Tywin Lannister And Olenna Tyrell

Before Diana Rigg€™s matriarch turned up on the show no one could stand up to Tywin Lannister, but with the Hand Of The King taking a more prominent role in Game Of Thrones, Olenna Tyrell arrived at just the right moment to show him that not everyone would bow before his steely gaze. The banter between these two very different but very powerful people has been a joy to watch. In season three, Olenna was able to match his wits when planning the marriage between Cersei and Loras Tyrell, each giving the other just enough leg room to negotiate without ever losing face. And again, in season four we saw both figures at Joffrey and Margarey's wedding, bonding over their frustrations over expensive weddings, while still having enough barbed retorts to show strength against each other. With her departure from King's Landing following the revelation that she arranged Joffrey's demise, the biggest loss will not be her relationship with Margery, but the continued banter with Tywin. A mix of distrust, admiration and wisdom have made them a powerful pairing indeed and it will be difficult to match that moving forward. If only we had had more of them together, then they would have been so much higher on this list.
