Game Of Thrones: 10 Characters We Didn't Want To Like
10. Catelyn Stark
In the beginning, nobody liked Catelyn. She was by far the least likable of the Starks. Even Ned as he beheaded a man was more sympathetic. The children all clearly loved each other, and Ned clearly loved all of his children. For the most part, it was a happy family, and we had a group of protagonists for which we could root shamelessly. The one exception was Catelyn. The general kindness that she showed toward almost every other character was completely overshadowed by the cold dismissiveness with which she treated Jon Snow. Granted, most women would not be expected to love and treat her husband's illegitimate son as she would her own children, but Catelyn is downright cruel to poor Jon. Overall, she does not make a very good first impression. Of course, Catelyn has hardly been the only unlikable character in the history of the show, but she had the misfortune to be an unlikable character who wasn't even much fun to not like. Still, as the seasons progressed, we had to begrudgingly accept that she wasn't actually all that bad. She proved more politically savvy than Robb, and even her decision to free Jaime Lannister was understandable. The moment when she truly won our sympathies, however, happened to be one of her last as a living woman. When the Freys turn on the Northmen at the Red Wedding and the slaughter begins, Catelyn makes a desperate plea for her son's life rather than her own. "Robb, get up. Get up and walk out. Please!" she begs. It's absolutely heartbreaking, and if you hadn't started crying when Talisa was stabbed or Robb took arrows to the chest, this was when the tears started flowing...and the woman who had mistreated Jon Snow back in Season 1 suddenly became a favorite. Bad timing for her, really.
Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
