Drogo was a mighty warrior who was drawn into an alliance with Viserys Targaryen to provide him an army to invade Westeros with. He married Daenerys, making her his Khaleesi and together they were expecting a son. The Khal is challenged by another Dothraki and is wounded while killing him, and the resulting medical treatment causes the wound to become life threatening. In an attempt to save him, his wife convinces a wise woman from a village they took slaves from to use blood magic on him. This does save Drago but leaves him like a vegetable, unable to do the most basic tasks. The majority of his Khalisar abandons him because of the ritual and their child is deformed. Daenerys cannot bear to see her once powerful husband left in such a state and smothers him with a pillow to put him out of his misery. His death results in the key ending scene of the first season, as a funeral pyre is built for him and his widow places her three dragon eggs next to his corpse. It is lit and Daenerys strides into the flames to be with Drogo in death, but instead she survives due to her Targaryen heritage and the heat causes the three eggs to hatch the first time that anyone has seen a live dragon for more than a hundred years.
