Probably the most major character that will be introduced next season, Doran is dearly departed Oberyn Martell's brother and the reigning prince of Dorne, the kingdom in the far south of Westeros. Doran sits in a wheelchair due to his horrible gout, and mostly stays in his family's summer home so that his enemies don't learn about his weakness. Doran attempted to stay neutral during War of the Five Kings, but like Oberyn, he wants to take vengeance on the Lannisters because they murdered his sister Elia. Following Oberyn's death in Tyrion's trial by combat, Doran makes sure Dorne stays neutral instead of leaping into a hasty war. After Oberyn's illegitimate daughters, the Sand Snakes, warmonger and cause unrest around Dorne, Doran imprisons most of them in order to keep the peace. After his daughter Arianne attempts to crown Myrcella Baratheon as the queen of Westeros instead of Tommen and fails, she berates her father for not doing anything about the Lannisters. Doran reveals that he has been working at their downfall for many years, making marriage pacts with the Targaryens themselves. Arianne was betrothed to Viserys, and now that he is dead, Doran sends his son Quentyn to Meereen in order to marry Daenerys and support her claim to the throne. Things seem to be coming to a head in Dorne by the end of Book 5 after Doran discovers a Lannister plot to have his youngest son Trystane killed. As the leader of one of the Seven Kingdoms, Doran will be a major new player in the game of thrones and will probably appear in 8 or even all 10 episodes of Season 5.
I'm a fan of all things comic book and an avid moviegoer. Trying to catch up on a never-ending backlog of films- maybe someday. Leave me a comment if you enjoy my articles, think I'm a hack, or anywhere in between.
