Game Of Thrones: 10 Spoilers Learnt By The Released Episode Titles

10. Eddard Stark's Greatsword Ice Will Be Reforged Into Widow's Wail And Oathkeeper

No-one would argue against Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper being the inspiration for Two Swords' title. After Ned Stark's execution, his Valyrian steel greatsword Ice is given to the tongue-less Ser Ilyn Payne, the King's Justice. However, in the run up to Joffrey's wedding, Tywin Lannister has the sword reforged into two, one for Joffrey and one for Jaime. The Lannisters haven't had a sword of Valyrian steel since King Tommen II Lannister lost theirs, Brightroar, on an ill-fated expedition to Valyria, much to the annoyance of Tywin who had previously offered to pay several Houses to part with their swords. Joffrey receives his as a wedding gift from his grandfather, and calls it Widow's Wail on the suggestion of a member of his court. In the books, we do not see Jaime receive his, though he talks about it with his uncle Kevan and seems to think Tywin gave it to him as a joke, seeing as how he no longer has his sword hand. He jokes that once he would have given his right hand for Valyrian steel, and now that he has, it is no longer of any use to him. Sansa is distraught when she realises that Ser Ilyn no longer has her father's sword, and Tyrion induces from this and the distinctive black and red rippled steel on the new swords that his father has had Ice reforged, and muses that he should have made sure the sword was sent back to the North with Eddard's bones.
