Game Of Thrones: 10 Things We Learned From "Breaker Of Chains"

1. Daenerys Has A Message For Meereen

After a long journey, Khaleesi and her followers have finally arrived at Meereen, the final city of Slaver€™s Bay. Its citizens watching from above, the city doesn€™t send out its own army to meet Daenerys, but rather a single rider. Jorah informs her that this champion will fight against whoever she sends to engage him. After witnessing this champion disrespect her and her army (no need to go into the details), Daenerys asks for her own champion. Grey Worm, Barristan and Jorah all volunteer, but she€™s unwilling to risk any of them. Finally, Daario volunteers, and since he€™s the least important of her advisors, he is given the honour. The champion charges towards Daarion on his steed, but the sellsword vanquishes the beast with a knife to the head. The horse topples over, and before the champion can stand up, Daario beheads him with his arakh. Meereen€™s citizens are awe-struck, while its archers let loose a volley of arrows at Daario, all of which miss and prompt him to repeat the champion€™s previous act of disrespect. Daenerys then addresses the citizens, telling them that the city€™s leaders have brought them nothing but chains and suffering. She promises that she doesn€™t bring them commands, but rather a choice and to give their leaders what they deserve. She then orders her army€™s catapults to fire its contents, which are revealed to be barrels filled with broken slave collars, symbolizing the freedom she brings them. One of last season€™s greatest moments was when Daenerys used her dragons and new army to slaughter the slave masters of Astapor. While this scene wasn€™t nearly as violent, it€™s momentous nonetheless as it shows how serious Daenerys is about freeing the slaves. Rather than attack right away, she instead addresses the citizens of Meereen directly to inform them that they have a choice other than submission to the city€™s masters. To show she€™s not blowing smoke, those barrels of collars were launched, proving that her previous liberation endeavors were successful. She still has to actually take the city, but this is certainly a symbolic victory for Khaleesi.
