Game Of Thrones: 10 Things We Learned From "Mockingbird"

4. Selyse and Melisandre Talk Religion

While enjoying a pleasant bath, Melisandre is visited by Stannis€™ wife Selyse, who wanted to see the priestess before they depart Dragonstone. After some small chat over their lack of humour, Melisandre talks about the power of lies. Most of her potions are deceptions, but in the end they lead people toward the truth, a.k.a the Lord of Light. Selyse asks Melisandre if she used one of her lust potions on Stannis, but the priestess denies this, saying that their sexual encounters are only physical, not emotional. Selyse thanks the Lord that the priestess was brought to them, and informs Melisandre that Stannis wants to bring their daughter with them. Selyse doesn€™t think this is a good idea due to her daughter€™s heretical doubt, but Melisandre states that the Lord needs Shireen to accompany her father and mother on her trip. The Lord of Light may be one of many religions in Westeros, but as we€™ve seen over the seasons, there is some truth to Melisandre€™s teachings. She may bend this truth sometimes to frame the Lord in a good light (bad pun), but her demonstrations of otherworldly power show that she€™s not just another random priest preaching hypothetical concepts and beliefs that can€™t be proven. If Melisandre has seen that Shireen holds some sort of importance, Selyse would be wise to listen to her.
