Game Of Thrones: 10 Things We Learned From "Oathkeeper"
6. Littlefinger And Olenna Were Behind Joffreys Death
Yes, the true masterminds behind Joffreys death have been revealed. First up, Petyr Baelish, who is taking Sansa to her Aunt Lysa (also Baelishs betrothed) in the Eyrie. Since he hired Dontos to get Sansa out of Kings Landing, he at least knew Joffrey would be murdered ahead of time. However, Sansa deduces that Baelish had a hand in the plot, saying that Tyrion couldnt have done it and that he wouldnt have trusted Dontos to do the job. Impressed by her deduction skills, Baelish tells her that one of the stones from the necklace that Dontos gave her was missing. The stone contained the poison that killed Joffrey. Sansa asks him why he would kill Joffrey since the Lannisters gave him wealth and power. Baelish says that a man with no motive is a man no one suspects. Sansa doesnt believe that his sole intent is to confuse the Lannisters, saying that if they find him, theyll put his head on a spike. Baelish reveals that hes willing to risk it all to gain everything. His friendship with the Lannisters was productive, but Joffreys instability forced him to change alliances. He says his new friends are predictable, reasonable and wanted Joffrey dead. This brings us to conspirator #2: Olenna Tyrell. About to depart for Highgarden, she has one last moment with Margaery. Knowing that her granddaughter will soon be matched with Tommen, she recounts how she wasnt originally supposed to marry Luther Tyrell. It was her sister Viola who was betrothed to him. Olenna was originally matched up with a Targaryen, but when she saw the man, she realises he wouldnt do. To fix this predicament, Olenna accidentally stumbled into Luthers room the night before he would propose to Viola. As suspected, the original proposal didnt happen, and Luther chose Olenna instead for her many...talents. Olenna uses this tale to recommend to Margarey that she start influencing Tommen before Cersei does. Finally, she reveals that she was behind Joffreys murder. It turns out she never planned to have her granddaughter marry that beast. Two of the smartest people in the show planned the murder, and that makes sense. Olenna was sitting near Joffrey at the wedding, so she had easy access to spiking his wine with the poison. Considering how loyal Mace Tyrell is to Tywin, its doubtful she consulted her son about the plan. Olenna has always seen the bigger picture, much like Baelish. Hes always had his own plans, and its clear he had bigger aspirations in life than serving the Lannisters. Together, they rid Westeros of one of its worst rulers, but as for their future plans, well have to wait and see.
