Game Of Thrones: 10 WTF Moments Of Season 3

2. Roose Bolton Wears His Armor ("The Rains Of Castamere")

"The Rains of Castamere" is probably not one of the most rewatched episodes of the series; it is, however, undoubtedly one of the most memorable. Why? The Red Wedding. The massacre of the Northern forces at the celebration of Edmure Tully's and Roslyn Frey's marriage. An act so despicable that even Tyrion--who burned thousands of men alive in Season 2 and benefited greatly from Robb Stark's demise--questions whether the grand Lannister victory was worth the means. The egregious violation of the sacred rule of guest right. All in all, it was not a happy day. While Tywin Lannister was the mastermind of the plot and Walder Frey set the stage, there's no doubt that the slaughter would not have gone so smoothly without the collaboration of Northern lord Roose Bolton. Bolton had already proved himself both remarkably self-serving and pragmatic, and the fact that he is the one to shove his sword into Robb's heart makes his treachery all the more monstrous. "The Lannisters send their regards," he says. Still, his murder of Robb Stark was not his big "WTF!" moment. It was not his quip to the doomed king. It was not his clear comfort in a situation that was meant to shame his liege lord. Roose Bolton's "WTF!" moment comes when he prompts Catelyn Stark to touch his sleeve and realize that he has worn his armor beneath his wedding finery. Even as she puts everything together--Grey Wind howling, Frey men barring the doors, the musicians playing the Lannister anthem--it is far too late for her to do anything, and Bolton's smile tells her (and us) that Robb Stark will finally be reaping the rewards of breaking his word to Walder Frey. The Lord of the Dreadfort doesn't say a word. He just...smiles. And then the world goes to hell.
