Game Of Thrones: 5 Winners & 5 Losers In 'First Of His Name'

1. Littlefinger

This next one contains those big SPOILERS we mentioned earlier. A long concealed truth is finally revealed at the Eyrie, and the mystery behind Jon Arryn€™s murder is brought to light. Jon Arryn€™s death was the event that kick-started the whole plot - it was the reason King Robert travelled north to Winterfell, to ask Ned Stark to become the new Hand of the King. We€™ve been led to believe all this time that it was a Lannister plot that brought about the end of Jon Arryn. As Ned retraced his predecessor€™s steps in King€™s Landing, we discovered that Jon Arryn had uncovered the truth about Joffrey€™s parentage €“ a clear enough motive for any Lannister to take the ultimate measure. Arryn€™s wife, Lysa, then fled the capital to escape the Lannisters and sent a message of warning to her sister, Catelyn. All of this happens in the very first episode, and ultimately leads to Ned discovering the same truth that Jon Arryn died for. Now, all this time later, we learn that it was Lysa herself, not the Lannisters, who poisoned Jon Arryn, and she did it at the behest of Littlefinger. Another piece to the puzzle of Littlefinger€™s grand scheme is put in place, but we€™re still a long stretch from really understanding his eventual endgame. Just who does he want to see on the Iron Throne come the end? The obvious answer is no doubt himself, but even Littlefinger€™s lofty ambitions are practical. If we know anything about Littlefinger at all, it€™s that his actions are well thought out and measured. He simply doesn€™t have the financial resources, heritage, or military strength behind him to make a realistic grab at the throne. So that leads us to believe he has a candidate to sponsor, but who? Littlefinger helped the Tyrells murder Joffrey, and he was the instrument behind Ned€™s discovery of Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen€™s illegitimacy, so clearly he isn't working in favour of the Lannisters. Perhaps the Tyrells, then? Well, their claim is only valid through their alliance with the Lannisters, and it looks as though they€™re going to be pretty happy with Tommen on the throne next to Margaery, so that doesn€™t appear to suit Littlefinger either. Could Littlefinger have a new contender hidden up his sleeve? That€™s a quite a reach, but it would be more likely than him being content with Tommen or supporting Stannis. At any rate, we€™re no closer to understanding the big picture, despite the revelations of the last few episodes. Only one thing is certain, Littlefinger has a plan, and that plan is not to be messed with.
