Game Of Thrones: 8 Things We Learned From "The Watchers On The Wall"

8. Sam Needs To Distract Himself

Waiting for an army of wildlings to attack can be just a tad stressful. To take his mind off possibly dying that night, Sam asks Jon what it was like to sleep with Ygritte. Since Sam€™s never been with a girl, hearing Jon€™s experience is the closest he€™ll ever get to knowing. When Jon asks him whether he would have slept with Gilly if she offered, Sam comments that their Night€™s Watch vows never specifically state that they can€™t sleep with women, only that they can€™t take a wife or sire children. When Sam asks again what it was like, Jon attempts to explain, but frustratingly says he€™s not a poet. After commenting how the wildlings took the one thing that mattered to him, he heads down after Jon tells him to get some sleep. Sam isn€™t feeling tired, so he heads down to the library to read and is discovered by Maester Aemon. Aemon asks what he was reading, to which Sam tells him a book about previous attacks by the wildlings and what they do to their enemies. Aemon deduces that Sam is worried about what fate befell Gilly at Mole€™s Town, and surmises that he loves her. Sam denies this, but Aemon knows it€™s true because he heard it in Sam€™s voice when he brought her to Castle Black. The maester remembers what to love someone is like despite his advanced age. As Aemon Targaryen, he met many women, but only one succeeded in winning his affections. Even now, Aemon can remember everything about her, from how she looked to how she smelled. Instead of continuing, however, he makes the same suggestion that Jon did and tells Sam to go to bed. With death and destruction heading their way, it€™s understandable that Sam€™s trying to distract himself before the battle, mostly by thinking of Gilly. Although he€™s taken his vows to the Night€™s Watch seriously, he€™s still like most men and desires women, except while other men might head to Mole€™s Town to sleep with a whore, Sam has only eyes for one woman. He may have denied Maester Aemon€™s comments, but it is obvious that he has feelings for Gilly, which is why this next scene is so fulfilling.
