Game Of Thrones Season 4: 10 Things Fans Who Haven't Read The Books Want To See

8. We Learn What The Hell Melisandre Is

Since we first met Stannis Baratheon, brother of the deceased King Robert, the mysterious Melisandre has been at his side. A red priestess of the Lord of Light, she has continuously claimed that Stannis's ascension to the throne of Westeros is written in prophecy and ordained by her god. Stannis, for his part, has been quick to follow her, making war on his nephew, King Joffrey, and the rest of King's Landing.

She's more than a priestess or a soothsayer, though €“ she's wielding some particular nasty power. After finally convincing Stannis to have sex with her, she immediately swells to a full pregnancy. She has Davos €“ a loyal ally of Stannis who doesn't trust Melisandre €“ to take her to the camp of Renly, Stannis's other brother (who also lays claim to the throne). Once there, she gives birth to a shadowy creature who assassinates Renly. Is Melisandre working for a vengeful god who wants to see Stannis victorious €“ or is she the true source of all of this eerie power? It's clear something isn't right, as Stannis's defeat at King's Landing goes against her predictions and drives her even madder. This season, we need to know the true story of Melisandre €“ where she's from, what power she wields, and what her final goal is.
