Games Of Thrones Season 7 Finale: What 'The Dragon And The Wolf' Really Means

6. Cersei's Deception And The Golden Company

Cersei Finale
HBO

Cersei had previously stated that she would do whatever she could to defeat her enemies, with Tyrion telling Dany to expect some sort of trap when they visited the Dragonpit. Ultimately, there was no wildfire and no slayings by the Mountain: instead, Cersei had an entirely more cunning plan - she deceived her would-be allies with a promise of assistance to send them away North.

As Jaime prepared to send the Lannister army North to help in the war with the White Walkers, Cersei revealed that she has no intention of working with Dany and Jon, and instead plans to hire the Golden Company (numbering 20,000 mercenaries) using the Iron Bank's gold to take back as much of her conquered kingdoms as she can while they're busy fighting the monsters in the North.

She also devastatingly reveals that Euron Greyjoy's apparent fear at the sight of the wight and vow to return home was a ruse and that he's headed to Essos to pick up the army (which will include elephants, rather delightfully). So we're going to see an even larger Lannister army next season, a possible marriage between Euron and Cersei and Jon and Dany forced to fight on two fronts.
