Gotham: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes
1. 'The Anvil Or The Hammer' (S1 E21)
By merit of not one, but two of the show's most disturbing moments, season 1's The Anvil or the Hammer' tops the list.
The lesser of the two unsettling aspects of this episode comes from Nygma as he casually disposes of Officer Tom Dougherty's corpse. Carrying it into the GCPD's forensics lab in two suitcases, he begins dissolving the remains in a sink before forging a goodbye note from his victim.
As if that wasn't dark enough, we also see the culmination of the Ogre storyline. After a night together, Barbara tries to leave the Ogre's apartment, only to stumble into his torture chamber. We revisit the scene to see Barbara tied up, being told that she'll be there until she learns to love the killer. He insists she gives him a name for his next victim, threatening to slit her through if she doesn't co-operate.
It's an episode that makes for difficult viewing in the best way, but it also shaped Barbara for the seasons to come, changing her from a slightly irritating innocent into a fully deranged psychopathic murderer all in one masterful stroke of storytelling.
