Gotham: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes

Season 2 marked the introduction of numerous villains, but one of the best had already (briefly) been featured in season 1.

After escaping Arkham, a group of inmates - including Barbara Kean and Jerome Valeska - are brought to Theo Galavan, who recruits them to do his bidding. He sends them out into the world as the Maniax, we're helpless to watch as they throw several captives from a rooftop, introducing themselves to Gotham City.

But their fun doesn't stop there. They go on to hijack a bus filled with teenage cheerleaders, which they promptly soak in gasoline and attempt (and fail) to set alight.

Despite the GCPD's intervention, the Maniax escape, and the episode culminates with an all-out assault on the GCPD, during which they kill everyone in sight, and tie Commissioner Essen to a chair. With her tied up, they point a camera in her face, proceeding to taunt and threaten her.

We learn afterwards that they shot and left Essen for dead, rounding out the episode with Jerome's message to the camera, in which he delivers a deranged monologue, channeling his inner Joker and hinting at more death and destruction to come.
