Gotham: 10 Ways To Introduce Batman's Greatest Villains

2. Jonathan Crane

It isn't hard to imagine how Crane could look prior to gaining his Doctorate, or dressing up like a deranged Wizard of Oz fan. It is probably safe to say he is a certainty to feature in Gotham some point down the line. That is if the show is an enduring success. Unlike Maxie and the Ventriloquist, age is a potential issue with how Crane is introduced. He could feasibly be several years older than Bruce, but a more interesting route would be to depict him at a similar age, pre-mask and pre-fear toxin. This would allow for the series to untangle the roots of Crane's obsession with fear. Continuing the use of childhood tropes, Crane could make for a thoroughly creepy and withdrawn kid, clouded by a darkness that Bruce recognises and relates to, but hasn't submitted to in the same way as Crane. The character could here become another of Gotham's lost boys, his Gothic, taxidermy filled, "haunted house" home making him the middle-class disturbed teen between the affluent Bruce and deprived Zsasz. To a degree the show's version of a young Norman Bates.
