Gotham: 17 Easter Eggs & References You Must See

8. The Joker May Already Be Out There

The reason we say not to get too excited about the "appearance" of Harley Quinn is because, well, she's not going to appear before the love of her life does, is she? And from the sounds of it the writers of Gotham are smart and don't want to introduced Batman's most iconic villain too early, preferring instead to set up their own world and mythos before diving too deep into the established rogues gallery. Which makes sense, since 1. The origin and motivations of The Joker are so deeply rooted in Batman's existence, that to introduce him while Bruce Wayne's still a kid wouldn't make sense, and 2. The Joker's sort of been overdone. And how are you possibly going to top Heath Ledger in the minds of the modern audience? Well, they say that, and we say all that, but already the hints that the Clown Prince Of Crime is already out there are rife. We spotted a couple of instances of graffiti across the city which read simply "SMILE" and, if you want to be more obvious about it, there's a whole scene in the pilot where Fish Mooney is auditioning a nervous stand-up comic (who tells really, really old jokes she finds hysterical for some reason) in a scene straight out of The Killing Joke. According to showrunner Bruno Heller potential "Jokers" are going to appear in every episode of Gotham, which means we might not see the man himself any time soon, but the show is certainly teasing his arrival at some point.
