In these days of Breaking Bad, Mad Men and the like, the showrunner of a TV series is almost as big a deal to the general public as the cast. Luckily Gotham has managed to land itself a pretty good one in the form of Bruno Heller, an industry veteran who has recently helmed the likes of HBO's Rome - a forerunner of the channel's bigger-budgeted shows - and the Mentalist, which means something very different in the US to the UK. Both those could be reassuring signs; after all, the Mentalist is a police procedural with a psychological edge, and if Gotham is known for anything, it's for being stuffed full of psychos. The political scheming and classical drama of Rome could find its own spin in this series, too, as Fox president Kevin Reilly described the show as an "operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality". That might just be because of the supervillains, though.
