Gotham Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'They Did What?'
Down...
1. Nyssa Al Ghul
Considering she's been the driving force behind the No Man's Land storyline, Nyssa Al Ghul's characterisation in this episode seriously let her down. While actress Jaime Murray delivers a solid performance, Nyssa simply wasn't all that convincing. Sure, her motivations to avenge her father's murder acted nicely as a goal for her to pursue, but it was her pantomime-esque monologues about said desire that made her less than stellar.
In addition to that, Nyssa doesn't actually do anything herself - other than bark orders at her hypnotised general - which is problematic to say the least, as we later learn that she's very skilled in physical combat, when she takes on Barbara and Gordon single-handedly.
If that wasn't bad enough, the character's narrative - much like the others in the series - reached what appeared to be a perfect conclusion, but for some reason, the showrunners opted to have Nyssa escape with her life intact - despite the brilliant death she received at the hands of Barbara.
The decision to keep Nyssa alive is a baffling one, especially when you consider that the character isn't all that important to the Batman mythology. With her far-more-iconic father well and truly dead, what's the point in keeping her around? After all of the devastation and destruction she'd caused, a death at the hands of Barbara would've been the perfect conclusion to her tale.
