Gotham Season 5 Premiere: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From Year Zero
Downs...
2. Ed Nygma's Frustratingly Repetitive Sub-Arc
With it being Gotham's final season, it's clear that the writers have gone all out in making the central characters become more and more like their comic book counterparts. Not only that, but they've also come up with some great sub-narratives for the villains, which is why Ed Nygma's sub-arc is extremely frustrating in comparison.
Making only two brief appearances in Year Zero, Ed is seemingly being affected by his split personality disorder once more. Throughout the episode, he discovers that he's getting up to no good while he's supposed to be asleep, which implies that Good Ed has once again taken control of his body while Bad Ed sleeps. While the changing of personalities is a decent enough storyline for the character, it's a bit annoying considering the show has already explored it on numerous occasions in the past.
Unless there is a twist coming which sees The Riddler's odd behaviour have nothing to do with Good Ed, then it's hard to see the point in revisiting a storyline - no matter how good it was the first time, or the second time - at this late stage in the game.
