Bryan Fuller, as well as comments from the cast all indicate a move away from 'killer of the week' formula that worked quite well with the first season. This is no surprise though, as in the past Fuller has hinted he saw the series as several plot arcs that will eventually lead to Silence of the Lambs. The fact that Will is incarcerated necessitates the move away from the show's formula into something more drawn out. That's not to say though that there won't be a new killer around to keep things lively for Crawford, and if past experience is anything to go on, he will likely lean on good old Dr. Lecter for help. Of course, we all know who the new villain's going to be Mason Verger, the sadistic paedophile played by Gary Oldman in Hannibal. Obviously they couldn't get Oldman back, but the casting team has once again outdoe themselves by bringing in Michael Pitt, who earned huge praise for his portrayal of Jimmy Darmody on HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Naturally, Verger still has his face at this point and he's said to be wary of Lecter, who's the therapist of Verger's twin sister Margot, who is routinely abused by her psychopathic brother. Knowing Hannibal, he's probably not going to stand for this, and is probably browsing his fine cookery books already. The introduction of a new 'Big Bad' will help add a bit of variety to the series without having to convolute the plot with unnecessary detours. There are several glimpses in the trailer for season 2 indicating that if it is Verger carrying out the killings or obviously, it could be someone else he isn't to be messed with. One scene in particular stands out depicting a mass grave of female bodies in an abandoned silo, and while it's possible that Hannibal might be to blame, it;s against his Modus Operandi to leave such tasty specimens to spoil. What's more likely is we're dealing with someone operating outside the central characters, someone who perhaps may only be caught with the help of a certain psychologically challenged criminal profiler.
