Hannibal Season 4: Everything We Know So Far
6. "Inception Meets Angel Heart"
In May 2017, Hannibal show-runner Bryan Fuller dropped a comment that was possibly one of the most loaded pieces of information regarding Season 4 so far. During a pod-cast, Post Mortem with Mick Garris via Entertainment Weekly, Fuller said: "There’s an interesting next chapter in the relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter that would be fascinating to unpack… " Fuller followed this at the Split Screen Festival, reported by IndieWire, by saying "It was going to be Inception meets Angel Heart.”
With very little concrete news regarding the plot of Season 4 and the possibility of a straight Silence of the Lambs storyline looking less and less likely due to legal rights, this is a fascinating snippet to unpack. Inception, Christopher Nolan's epic sci-fi espionage thriller, deals with the concept of a dream within a dream and Alan Parker's Angel Heart sees Micky Rourke take on 'Louis Cyphre' aka Lucifer (Robert DeNiro), while unwittingly investigating himself in a twisty 'whodunit' style classic.
Fuller is no stranger to sci-fi - American Gods proved that - but dream-scapes and pre-deterministic theological murder mysteries? It sounds like Fuller material through and through.
While speculation on what this actually means is fun, it's not always helpful and as there are no plans, or indeed permissions for a Silence style continuation of the series, the dream/devil pitch is fascinating. Fuller has been very clear that Mikkelsen and Dancy would return to the show so perhaps Fuller will present entirely new material in an entirely new way, should the opportunity arise in the future.
