Hannibal Season 4: Everything We Know So Far
5. Networking The Problem
Hannibal was produced by Gaumont, a French owned company and distributed by NBC world-wide. It first aired on Amazon and in 2020, Netflix added Hannibal to their already impressive line-up of streaming shows and movies. Since its cancellation in 2015, Fuller has been keen to have another distributor pick up the property as it seems that while production is not an issue, distribution is. So where do the networks fit into the puzzle of Season 4?
Fuller said on Twitter in May 2019 "No one has given up! I've made it clear I want to do it, the cast wants to do it. We just need a network or a streaming service that wants to do it too. I don't feel there's a clock on it or an expiration date for the idea. We just need someone to bite." He went on to say in Vulture "NBC cancelled the show on NBC but that does not preclude us from being able to take the show elsewhere."
Originally, Fuller couldn't approach Netflix as he already had a deal in place with Amazon but as of 2020 that has changed. Will Netflix take the plunge even though there are legal issues with the use of Clarice Starling? Perhaps not, as now CBS have begun production on Clarice, which would pose direct competition for any distributor willing to work with Fuller.
Bad ratings and graphic content make this a risky prospect for any major studios - all shows have an element of risk associated with them, Hannibal is a risk worth taking.
