Hannibal Season 4: Everything We Know So Far
4. THAT Season 3 Cliffhanger
It's time to discuss that ending - the Season 3 finale of Hannibal was almost a literal cliffhanger, more of a cliff jumper actually. After Will and Hannibal finally team up to take down Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage), the season ends in a predictable blood bath, with Hannibal tearing out Dolarhyde's throat and Will tenderly embracing Hannibal, right before throwing both himself and Lecter from the top of a high cliff.
A sacrifice on Will's part? Did Hannibal willingly take the plunge?
A crafty post-credit sequence gives us a little insight there; Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal's own psychiatrist, sits calmly at a table, set for a luxurious dinner, partly consisting of one of her own legs. Viewers spotted one vital detail - the table is set for three people. The obvious conclusion is that she was waiting for Hannibal and one other person to return. Was the third party Will? Quite possibly and this would seem to make sense, given the love triangle that already existed with those characters.
Season 4, if produced, will have to pick up from where it ended, the audience needs closure to this situation. If Fuller succeeds in getting permission to feature Starling and The Silence Of The Lambs plot, the direction is clear. However, with Fuller's statements concerning Season 4 legal issues, it might not be that simple.
In 2015 Fuller teased another possibility to The Hollywood Reporter - that he would examine "something in the novel Hannibal that has not been done in any of the adaptations." Intriguing...
