HBO's Watchmen TV Show: Everything We Know So Far
3. Dave Gibbons Has Approved It
Having read the screenplay for the series pilot, original Watchmen artist, Dave Gibbons, expressed a clear sense of enthusiasm for the project, stating that it was refreshing and most likely not at all what people will expect.
This is positive news for the ongoing perception of the series, especially given the sacrosanct nature of the original Watchmen material. Alan Moore is notoriously disapproving of adaptations of his work. In the case of Watchmen, Moore believed it to be a story workable only in comic-book format. Lindelof confirmed in his letter to the fans that he at least tried to reach out to Moore, but had not divulged the outcome of his conversation, or if there even was one.
In any case, David Gibbons' approval is as good an accolade as anyone could hope for. Given the success and prolific nature of Watchmen, it would be of no benefit to any original progenitor to endorse new material, unless they genuinely liked the idea. So this is a very good sign indeed.
