Homer Simpson's 25 Greatest Moments

6. Homer Versus Frank Grimes

From: Homer's Enemy (Season 8, Episode 23) However, for every moment of brilliance, Homer will always commit another of utter stupidity. And during 'Homer's Enemy' he's in one of his most imbecilic moods. But that's just Homer, and everyone loves him for it. Everyone except hard-working, no-nonsense Frank Grimes. To a man who has had to toil his whole life to get anything, a layabout like Homer, who life just keeps on giving to ('You've been to space?!' 'Sure. You've never been?'), is an enemy. While Grimes tries to convince everyone what a moron Homer is, they just seems to love him all the more. Who cares if he's an awful nuclear safety inspector who could kill us all, he's a fun guy, right? In the end, Grimes is driven mad by Homer's dimwittedness yet universal love and dies in an accident at the plant (after impersonating Homer). At his funeral, Homer falls asleep and mumbles. The mourners all begin to laugh at Homer and none watch as Frank Grimes is laid to rest. In this ingenious conceit for an episode, we get to see our beloved Homer through the eyes of a real-life person. Although we don't exactly go against our yellow hero, you can't help but side with the put-upon Grimes just that little bit as he is actually right. But, hey, everyone loves Homer!

5. 'To Alcohol!'

From: Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment (Season 8, Episode 18) If there's one other great love in Homer's life apart from Marge, it's beer. Homer's alcoholism has been made light of in several episodes (even if it's nowhere nearly as bad as his best friend and drunken slob Barney) but in this episode, where Springfield brings back the Prohibition of the 1920s, Homer makes one of his most prudent comments ever, about his lifeblood. With alcohol once again legal, Homer leads a toast to drink: 'To alcohol, the cause of, and answer to, all of life's problems.' This line is surely the pinnacle of the strange words of wisdom that sometimes leave Homer Simpson's mouth and one of those phrases that only The Simpsons can produce that transcend the show and become part of public consciousness. To The Simpsons!

4. The Land Of Chocolate

From: Burns Verkaufen de Kraftwerk (Season 3, Episode 11) 'The Land of Chocolate' dream sequence surely needs no introduction. The scene, in which Homer dances with the chocolate bunnies, taking bites out of chocolate lampposts, mailboxes and even chocolate dogs (only to get excited when he finds chocolate is for sale half price in a store window), is one of the most treasured in The Simpsons canon. The idea behind it, the animation and the music all come together to form this stand-out moment. Homer's deliriously happy skipping is one of the funniest sights ever animated on the show and it's all topped off perfectly when we realise that Homer is zoned out and humming the tune in the real world, to the bemusement of his bosses. For showing just how easily it is for Homer's mind to wander (the daydream is sparked by one of his new German bosses saying they are from the land of chocolate) and being an eternal reminder of just how hilarious Homer can be, The Land of Chocolate sequence is the cream of the crop. Mmm, cream...
