House Of The Dragon: Everything We Know So Far

8. A Question Of Succession

House of the Dragon
HBO

Game of Thrones told an elaborate story based around the intricacies of war, and while House of the Dragon will feature its fair share of blood and violence, it will be a much more straightforward conflict. Though other Houses will feature, the fighting will largely remain within the confines of House Targaryen.

When King Viserys took to the Iron Throne, he inherited a peaceful kingdom from Jaehaerys. However, this all changed when he named his daughter as his heir rather than his brother in the absence of any sons, complicated further by his refusal to renounce his actions when his second wife did bare him sons.

This split the Targaryens into two different factions. Those in support of Princess Rhaenyra, Viserys' daughter, and those who believed his eldest son by Alicent Hightower should be his rightful heir. Despite only wanting to preserve peace in the realm, in doing this Viserys kicked off the bloody Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons.

Less intricate than Game of Thrones certainly, but surely no less spectacular. This story has the potential to top even the strongest story arc from its predecessor if handled correctly.
