How Better Call Saul Season 4 Ending Connects To Breaking Bad

1. Is There Any Hope Left?

The tragedy of Better Call Saul lies in inevitability. Usually, this is something that hurts prequels, because you know where it's going, but here it just adds to the sadness that is Jimmy McGill's arc. He wants to be better, he tries to be better, but he keeps on slippin' - and we're watching as a man who wants to be good can't help but be bad, because every time he does things the right way doors are slammed in this face.

The transformation is not quite complete, though - not just yet. We are now most of the way there, but so far it's the name he's using professionally; he is, as far as we know, still Jimmy McGill outside of the law world, but there's not much to be hopeful about.

We hope that Kim can arrest the slide, but know that she can't halt it for good. We hope that he still wants to be better, but know he fully becomes Saul anyway. So the real hope, then, must lie in the future, which we haven't visited since the first episode of Season 4. There's not much hope for Jimmy, and none for Saul, so instead we'll just have to hold out hope for Gene.
