How I Met Your Mother: 10 Best Characters Who Appeared After Season One

2. The Captain

Zoey's ex-husband, George Van Smoot, better known as The Captain, makes a huge splash. This boat-obsessed billionaire befriends Ted, much to Ted's dismay. Despite appearing friendly and saying friendly things, the Captain's eyes evoke that of a serial killer. So, when Ted and Zoey become close, his invitation to go sailing on a boat off in the middle of nowhere comes off as ominous. When the two hit the high seas, Ted fears for his life, which, when The Captain finds out, he takes well, and the two start a friendship until Ted actually starts dating Zoey.

The Captain returns to How I Met Your Mother when he hires Lily as his art consultant. Lily helps him acquire art for his collection, and he even brings her (and Marshall, Marvin, and Daisy) along with him for a yearlong trip to Italy.

The Captain's defining quirk is his love of all things nautical, which makes his eventual romance with "Boats Boats Boats" Becky all the funnier.

The Captain proves to be a scene stealer as an adversary, friend, and employer. With his sheer unpredictability, including his past as an Olympic fencer, you'll never know how he'll make you laugh.
