Okay, maybe this is a sound financial investment either way, but Ted's decision to buy the iconic house, in which he eventually (decades down the line) tells the story of how he met Tracy to his kids, for a family he was nowhere near having, is presumptuous at best, and another example of Ted's thoughtless impulsiveness at worst.

The fact that Ted bought what one can imagine to be a pretty lucrative piece of real estate in suburban New York isn't the "crazy" part here (though while planning ahead is always nice, did he never consider that his imaginary future wife might want to live somewhere else?), but rather that he did so in reaction to his mother getting married for a second time.

Following a childish fit at his mother's wedding to Clint, Ted disappears for three days, indulging in the most expensive bout of retail therapy known to man. Ted buys a house which, much like his love life, needs a tonne of work, simply to lift his spirits and distract himself from his mother's marriage.
