When Ted finally found out that Robin developed feelings for him, he jumped the gun and lied that he had broken up with Victoria, cheating on his long distance girlfriend and potentially ruining any future relationship with Robin. A phone call mix-up led to Robin finding out, resulting in the apparent hopeless romantic breaking the heart of two women he allegedly cared deeply about in the same night.

After waiting so long to get with Robin, Ted couldn't keep it in his pants another day, not even having the decency to call Victoria and break up with her before making out with Robin, delaying a difficult conversation for the chance of a quick and easy lay.

While this was a massive dick move of Barney Stinson proportions, many fans have argued that Ted should never have broken up with Victoria in the first place, with Robin even acknowledging that Ted should have ended up with her in Season Nine.
