Season Six of How I Met Your Mother is the show at its most compelling and emotionally engaging. After Marshall's dad dies earlier in the season, Barney makes the decision to try and reconnect with his own father, Jerome Whittaker, played to perfection by John Lithgow.
Despite Barney saying their reunion went well, his friends soon learn that he lied to cover up the fact that his dad isn't what he remembered. The gang then convince him to have dinner with his father and attempt to make amends, but during the meal it is revealed that Barney's half-brother is named after Jerome. Barney, of course, is devastated.
Barney's tirade at his father is one of the most powerful moments of the show, and a key scene when it comes to understanding just how complex and broken Barney really is. Plus, watching Neil Patrick Harris and John Lithgow act against one another is everything you want and more, and a top tear-jerker for many fans. A truly legendary moment.
