It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Each Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Mac
Played by showrunner Rob McElhenney, Mac (full name Ronald MacDonald) is co-owner of Paddy’s where he works security detail. He’s the childhood friend of Charlie and roommate and high school friend of Dennis.
Considering himself the brains of The Gang, Mac’s enthusiasm for his friends’ schemes is only matched by his own inflated ego and obsession with body image to the point that his altering physique has become yet another one of the show’s running jokes.
However, Mac’s fluctuating muscularity is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes his character. He’s also devoutly religious and frequently uses his beliefs to demonstrate his worth to his peers, but only when it offers a direct benefit to himself. Most notably, though, both of these personality quirks are used to mask his thinly veiled homosexuality.
Despite Mac’s brazen selfishness, however, he proves to be one of the more sympathetic members of The Gang. In addition to suffering emotional scars from his relationship with his father (who he inadvertadly gets killed), the moment he came out as gay to him is one of the most touching moments in the show's history.
