It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: The Gang's Most Outrageous Exploits From Each Season

10. The Gang Gets Racist (Season 1)

The very first scene in the very first episode establishes exactly what kind of show Sunny is. Dee is talking about a friend she made in acting class while the Gang closes up Paddy€™s. A man walks through the door and the guys quickly become confrontational. Dee introduces the man as her friend, Tyrell, and awkwardness ensues until Mac clears the air with the helpful explanation: €œWe weren€™t expecting you to be black, that€™s all.€ It's the kind of uncomfortable, politically incorrect humor that quickly becomes a series hallmark, showcasing the Gang's antisocial tendencies. Tyrell turns out to be gay, disappointing Dee but making Charlie and Dennis very happy when Tyrell's promoting skills turn Paddy€™s into Philly€™s hottest new gay bar. Meanwhile, Charlie makes several black friends during a game of Dominoes solely to convince the love of his wife, the Waitress, that he's not racist. This first episode introduces several important characteristics that continue throughout the series. Dennis' vanity is explored as he relishes the attention of his gay customers, flirting with them shamelessly. Dee€™s bad luck with men begins and Charlie€™s infatuation and miserable luck with the Waitress is established.
