Jessica Jones: 11 Things From The Comic They Didn't Show

7. The Mutant Effect

The mutant race has always played an immense role in the Marvel universe, with their plight constantly changing the course of the world around them. Since uttering the word €˜mutant€™ in any show or film that isn€™t the property of Fox would result in an army of lawyers marching down upon them, Marvel had to forfeit any reference to the X-Men or mutants in general in their live-action properties. Mutants play a large part in Alias, directly influencing the plot and the world in which Jessica lives. Jessica accidentally reveals her powers when drinking at bar, forcing the bartender to threaten her with a bat and tell her that he doesn€™t want her €˜mutant sh*t€™ in his establishment, presumably because it may grow wings and fire laser beams at the patron. One particular case that Jessica takes shows the horrors facing mutants in the Marvel universe (this all takes place directly after House of M and hatred for mutants is at an all-time high). Jessica is called up to a small town to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl who may or may not be a mutant. It turns out that the girl is a lesbian (there€™s a message there, folks!), however this does not stop the town from revealing its ugly, bigoted ways through violence and intimidation. In one particular scene, Jessica is trying to take Rebecca, the missing teen, out of a nightclub, only to be stopped by a burly bloke. Jessica asks him if he€™s ever been kicked in the nuts by a super hero and then gives him a swift boot in the nether regions. Swallow two walnuts whole and then cough them up as you slam a sledgehammer into your member; that€™s what it feels like.
