Jessica Jones Season 3 Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

1. The Restrained (Yet Satisfying) Fan Service

The Defenders
Netflix/Empire

If previous Netflix Marvel shows were arguably a little too over-zealous with the fan-baiting Easter eggs and excessive cross-over cameos from other shows, Jessica Jones' third season actually strikes a firmly respectable balance.

There are numerous references to the exterior MCU that, while not substantial or at all visual in nature, nevertheless address the wider context of superheroes in the world.

Best of all, there's a single cameo from a certain fellow Defender late in the season that, while undeniably a feat of fan service, gives the show a fleeting and much-needed shot of adrenaline just when it needs it most.

There are many who will (perhaps rightly) argue that these shows never did enough to tether themselves to the mainline MCU, but the references here at least feel less pandering and desperate than they perhaps did in many prior seasons.
