Marvel's Jessica Jones: 13 Big Questions After Binge-Watching Season 1
6. How Does The Show Top Kilgrave?
Who is better, Kilgrave or Kingpin? Much like the Jessica Jones or Daredevil debate, it's a question that's sure to be asked a lot in any conversation about the show in the coming weeks. Wilson Fisk was arguably the best villain Marvel have put on screen, a hulking figure, menacing, brutal, and yet complicated; he wasn't outright evil, and indeed wanted the same things as the hero, almost like a dark reflection. He was a different sort of villain, especially compared to what superhero fare usually offers up, and it was mesmerising to watch. Kilgrave is cut from a similar cloth, at least in terms of not being your standard villain. The mind control might be a typical super power, but it's played to a horrific effect here, and there is nothing typical about David Tennant. Anyone doubting his ability to play a villain will very much be eating their words after this series. Unlike Fisk, he isn't some bogeyman, but a very real person. It's a much more personal story between Jessica and Kilgrave, which really helps sell the villain; he's threatening, yet also has understandable emotions, and at times you may even feel sorry for him. He's twisted, he's manic, he's unpredictable. Is he better than Fisk? I'm not sure, and would probably err on the side of 'not quite', but it's extremely close. In terms of Jessica Jones, the bigger question is who will be the next villain, and how can they possibly top this?
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
