Klaus: 8 Reasons To Watch Netflix's New Christmas Classic

5. The Animation Is Amazing

Despite looking at first glance like a stylised sort of CG, Klaus is in fact a hand-drawn 2D animated film, using different advanced techniques and technology to give it an almost 3D feel.

The techniques used to give it a sort of 3D look involve different painting, shading, texturing and lighting effects layered over a drawn 2D base. Other advanced technology was utilised in the process as well, such as a different form of tweening (digital in-betweening) used in the process of layering lighting and texture effects naturally on top of the drawn 2D base, building visual depth on the masterful techniques of seasoned traditional 2D animators.

Other well-known animators who worked on this film include James Baxter, known for his work on The Prince of Egypt, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Beauty and the Beast.

The soft, smooth 2D style of the film adds to its instant classic feel, and there's a level of depth and motion in the film that is largely associated with 3D. As it's Paolo's take on how 2D animation would have progressed on its own without CG replacing the medium, one cannot overstate the feats of 2D animation achieved in this film.
