20. Memory Work Ends Via Teleportation
On to Chapter 3 now for a moment that is weird enough on its own, but also catches you off guard with its abruptness.
At Summerland, there is something called "memory work"; where a mutant with memory powers named Ptonomy, and Summerland's leader, Melanie Bird, explore the memories of new recruits to see how they tick. In addition, they have a special grass room out in the forest for it.
They begin David's memory work and at first, everything seems to be going well enough. This is until they begin exploring David's memory of the aforementioned kitchen explosion, the details of which he clearly doesn't want to relive. He resists, and flings them all out of the memory.
They return not to the memory work room, however, but to a sitting room in the main building (with an X window for good measure.) It happens so quickly, that even Ptonomy and Mealnie are dumbfounded. When they realize David has more power than previously thought, Ptonomy simply leans down to him and asks the question on everyone's mind: "What are you?"
