Legion: 6 Ups & 1 Down From 'Chapter 2'

3. Exploring The Past (And Lenny's Return)

Aside from giving the guys behind-the-scenes a cool toy to play with, the memory work Ptonomy does with David does prove useful to the characters, the episode, and the show overall.

It's an effective way of getting to explore more of David's past, from his childhood with sister Amy through to his adult relationships. We get to learn more about his girlfriend, about David's state-of-mind and how he views himself, and his bond with his sister, which sets up the events towards the end of the episode. David is an interesting, multi-faceted character, and while it's important to see where his story is going, it's also interesting to look at where he's been, and the links between them.

What the past also does is bring about the return of Aubrey Plaza's Lenny, the comedic heart of the show (even if that heart isn't beating anymore). Her comeback here involves an oven and a drug dealer, and it's suitably weird, hilarious, and a little tragic. It's still not entirely clear what the deal is with Lenny - though it becomes increasingly likely she isn't real - but Plaza is so much fun to watch in the role it almost doesn't matter.
