Legion: 6 Ups & 1 Down From 'Chapter 2'

1. The Distracting Paternal Hints

Legion David past

In the comics (and look away now if you really don't want to know), David Haller, aka Legion, is the schizophrenic mutant son of none other than Professor X himself, Charles Xavier.

It's not really a spoiler, it's just a part of who the character of Legion is. And while the show has made it clear David is a mutant, they haven't answered the question of whether Charles Xavier is his father. It's something Hawley has spoken about, and he's mentioned the possibility of Xavier showing up (just not the Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy versions, obviously) in either Season 1 or further down the line.

What they do here is offer a little tease about David's father, but very deliberately refuse to show his face. For me, anyway, it didn't quite work as a tantalising hint of something to come, but just a distraction (maybe it works better if you don't know his comic origins?). It reminded me somewhat of the annoying way Supergirl's first season would hint at, but never show, Superman, leaving the series in his shadow. The connection to X-Men isn't a strength of Legion, it's the differences that make it stand out, and while they could feasibly do something big and surprising, this felt unnecessary here.
