Lost In Space Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
2. Most Of The Characters Are Unlikeable
It's clear that Lost in Space wants the audience to identify with and warm to the show's heroes - the Robinson family in particular - so it's a major failing on the series' part, then, that most of the central characters are so thoroughly unlikeable.
The three children in particular can be tough to deal with: Will (Maxwell Jenkins) is whiny and annoying, Penny (Mina Sundwall) is quip-happy and obnoxious, and Judy (Taylor Russell) is a humourless bore. As for the parents? John (Toby Stephens) is a bland cipher, and Maureen's (Molly Parker) coldness may be too offputting for many.
That's to say nothing of Parker Posey's antagonist June Harris, who is more irritating than deliciously villainous, stopping just short of twirling her moustache in a rare dodgy performance from the indie film legend.
It doesn't help that so many of these characters are supposed to smart scientists, and yet, they make so many routinely idiotic decisions you might start likening the show to Prometheus or Alien: Covenant.
Moreover, when practically every human character is less charming than the robot, you know something went wrong.
